Abstract The application of a compact pulsed fiber laser for high-speed time-resolved particle image velocimetry (TR-PIV) measurements in the potential core turbulent round jet is presented at repetition rates up to $$500\,\hbox {kHz}$$ 500 kHz . master oscillator power amplifier architecture consists pulsable seed diode whose emission amplified Yb-doped fiber. operated continuously ranging from $$10\,\hbox 10 $$1\,\hbox {MHz}$$ 1 MHz with adjustable pulse widths an output 50 W. maximum rated energy $$486\,\upmu \hbox {J}$$ 486 μ J reached $$100\,\hbox 100 , making suitable flows and highly transient phenomena. To demonstrate feasibility flow velocimetry, TR-PIV conducted jet. Two different camera systems are employed: CMOS running $$200\,\hbox 200 $$400\,\hbox 400 situ storage CCD burst-mode PIV For system, capability measuring several characteristic quantities discussed regard effects uncertainty spatial resolution. system extends range offering continuous pulsing footprint. amount consecutive images solely limited by onboard camera, which enables unprecedented temporal dynamic ranges. High-speed Imaging and Piv Measurements in Turbulent Cavitating Flows around 2d Hydrofoils

The paper reports on high-speed imaging and PIV study of cavitating flows around a flat plate with semicircular leading edge and a NACA0015 hydrofoil. Both foils were investigated at a series of attack angles ranging from 0 to 9° with varying cavitation number. Several known types of cavitation common to both foils, but also some different patterns, were registered. At small angles of incidence...

High Speed Thin Metal Cutting using Fiber Laser Technology

There are several methods available for precision cutting of thin metals less than 0.06-inch thick used for these applications, which include materials such as stainless steel, titanium, nickel, and aluminum. The major options, lasers, electric discharge machining (EDM), water-jet, and chemical machining each have a role to play. However, precision fiber laser cutting technology is now emerging...

Size Distribution Measurement of Candle\'s Soot Nanoparticles by Using Time Resolved Laser Induced Incandescence

Time resolved laser induced incandescence (LII) technique is used to measure size distribution of soot nanoparticles of candle's flame. Pulsed Nd:YAG laser is used to heat nanoparticles to incandescence temperature and the resulting signal is measured. Mass and energy balance equations are numerically solved to calculate temperature of soot particles in low fluence regime. Assuming Plank black ...

Simulating turbulent viscous high–speed flows on unstructured grids

This paper discusses ongoing work on an all-Mach number, non–dissipative algorithm to solve compressible flows on unstructured grids. The algorithm is capable of handling unstructured grids, which allow efficient and speedy generation of computational meshes for complex geometries. The novel feature of the algorithm is an incompressible scaling for pressure that naturally yields the divergence–...
